History

The Camden Federation of Private Tenants (CFPT) was set up as a Friendly Society in 1980 as a mutual support group to help tenants organise and campaign for their rights. Since this time it has worked towards providing a voice for all private tenants in Camden.

Over the years as other similar organisations folded, CFPT and our sister organisation, Brent Private Tenants Rights Group (BPTRG), have become more important on a regional and national level. Our voice increasingly represents private tenants throughout the UK.

The successive Housing Acts of 1988 and 1995 eroded private tenants’ rights, and saw the introduction of Assured Shorthold tenancies as the default tenancy with market rents that spiralled upwards in the ensuing property boom, and that seems only now to be slowing down.

However, after many years of campaigning, CFPT was instrumental alongside the Campaign for Fairer Fair Rents and BPTRG in the implementation of the Maximum Fair Rent Order 1999 - or rent cap as it is more popularly known - which, at least, offered some protection for Regulated (or Protected) tenants against rampant rent rises based on ever-increasing market rent comparables.
